Bordering the Empty Quarter is a collaborative research project initiated by Michael Hersrud and Levi Hammett that began in 2010. The intent of the project is to collect visual and vernacular imagery within the contemporary culture of Qatar and organize the images to reveal patterns, commonalities, disparities and contextual relationships.

The tiny country of Qatar has been relatively unheard of by a majority of the world, but has recently emerged into the spotlight because of it's natural resources, immense wealth, rapid growth, political & economical influence in the Islamic region and the recent successful bid to host the 2022 World Cup.

Bordering the Empty Quarter is both a creative venture and an ethnographic survey that attempts to document personal encounters, curate graphical ephemera and depict the surrounding landscape. The web-based taxonomy of images exhibit the unique viewpoint of expatriates who have been fortunate to gain first-hand access and be transported to a fantastical land intertwined with ethnicity, tradition and post-modernity.

Cultural Camouflage on exactlocation.

Cultural Camouflage is a project initiated to explore the subtle and often undervalued cultural patterns of societies undergoing rapid urban growth and modernization. This edition is an interactive data visualization that allows users to explore an endlessly generated visual landscape based on the cultural patterns of Doha, Qatar.

The initial Cultural Camouflage study was a photo-ethnographic investigation carried out by Pornprapha Phatanateacha & Levi Hammett, two designers who live and work in Doha, Qatar. The study explored cultural markers found in Shanghai, Beijing, and the 'China Towns' of Bangkok, London, and San Francisco, with the aim of identifying cultural patterns which are able to endure the process of globalization, modernization, and migration.

Deliberate Removal : Creating space for participation,
A Thesis by Levi Hammett,
Rhode Island School of Design, 2006.

Abstract:

In the information-dense context of the internet, television and urban spaces, content is pre-digested and condensed into sound bites, creating an environment where communication rarely probes below the surface of an idea or event.

This study uses a process of removal to create design work that contains obvious gaps and vacant pauses between the bits of information contained in the visual elements. The remaining forms are only fragments of the whole, hinting at the larger image, leaving just enough that the imagination can complete the picture. Like the narrowed space between ideas in a metaphor, the reading becomes a moment of discovery when the mind instantly bridges the gap and synthesizes an understanding of the subject that is both uniquely personal and memorable.

In the context of our visually saturated culture, these works exist as low-density moments that seem to have little significance upon first glance, yet, like distant memories, dreams or unanswered questions, they linger, incubating in the mind of the viewer long after the initial encounter. And here, the power of the question becomes more potent than the answer. These projects invite speculation and provide a space for people to create their own conclusions, their own opinions, and ultimately their own identity.
